Professional Installation of Skylights & Sun Tunnels
Skylights & Sun Tunnels
High-quality skylights and sun tunnels add energy efficiency, beauty and comfort to area homes. Daniel Hood Roofing Systems installs durable VELUX® products that give homeowners customized roofs with greater curb appeal and value.
A common misconception is that skylights are fancy windows, but in reality, they instantly boost the amount of natural light that gets into your home. According to the Department of Energy, many currently available skylights are equipped with mirrored reflectors, larger lenses, open-sided cylinders and other features that make them useful additions to the home. Skylights are also great for providing effective ventilation. Hot air tends to get trapped within the walls of your home, but it can quickly escape through a well-positioned skylight. Daniel Hood Roofing Systems installs high-quality VELUX skylights, and our experts can help you find the perfect skylights to integrate into your roof.
Curb-Mounted & Deck-Mounted Skylight Options
Daniel Hood Roofing Systems offers two types of VELUX skylights:
- Curb-mounted skylights are best for roofs that are flat, although they can also work for a roof with a pitch or slope that does not exceed 60 degrees.
- Deck-mounted skylights work best on roofs that feature more pronounced slopes. Ideally, they will be installed on roofs with a pitch that ranges anywhere from 14 to 85 degrees. Deck-mounted fixtures can be attached directly to your roof, giving them a lower profile than their curb-mounted counterparts.
Daniel Hood Roofing Systems can help you find the perfect curb-mounted or deck-mounted skylights to add to your home. We can also install your skylights, which typically takes around half a day to three days. Regardless of which mount you choose, we can also help you select one of the four available VELUX skylight design options.
Manual “Fresh Air” Skylight
The VELUX Manual “Fresh Air” Skylight is a conventional home fixture that has been modernized to serve you more effectively. This particular skylight uses Neat glass, which is made from silicon dioxide to make it smooth and flawless. Since skylights are typically placed high up on your roof, the smoothness prevents water from pooling on the roof and leaving behind unsightly spots. Another benefit of having the Neat glass is that you won’t have to deal with as much disruptive noise, even if the rain is falling hard. Because the rain is constantly sliding down the smooth glass and on to the rest of your roof, the noise will be reduced significantly. Neat glass also helps with heat gain and improves the transfer of light from the outside to your home interior.
Electric “Fresh Air” Skylight
Depending on the layout of your home, getting a manual skylight may not be the best idea. Although electric skylights do require more prep work, they will fit better in some homes. For example, this skylight comes with a 20-inch hardwire that must be connected to a standard junction box before installation can begin. There is extra installation work required, but the features of this innovative skylight outweigh the additional prep time. Among the best features of VELUX’s Electric “Fresh Air” Skylight is the integrated rain sensor. Once the sensor catches wind of the impending rain, it will automatically close the skylight. Of course, you don’t always have to rely on the sensor to close the window. There’s also a button you can use to flip the skylight open or closed. It’s also important to note that all the other features included with the Manual “Fresh Air” Skylight, such as the Neat glass, are still offered together with this electric variant.
In colder areas where ventilation is not as important, getting a skylight that can be opened up still offers benefits. For example, easy access to natural light offers health and comfort advantages. The Fixed Skylight from VELUX uses Neat glass, so there’s no need to be concerned about water accumulation, noise or leaking. Another upside to getting this skylight is its affordability. For homeowners looking for a more accessible upgrade, this skylight fits the bill.
Solar Powered “Fresh Air” Skylight
The final option for homeowners searching for curb-mounted or deck-mounted skylights is the Solar Powered “Fresh Air” Skylight from VELUX. In many ways, this solar powered home fixture is similar to the electric option. The standard VELUX features and the integrated rain sensor are all included, but in addition, this solar powered skylight can also be operated using a remote control. Instead of wiring, this skylight relies on a different system to work properly. The solar panel on the skylight supplies power to the concealed battery-powered operator, which is connected to a control system. The control system is the one in charge of opening and closing the skylight. Because no wiring is involved, this skylight will not add to your electric bill. One last thing to note about the Solar Powered “Fresh Air” Skylight from VELUX is that it’s part of the Go Solar Initiative. If you decide to purchase one of the products included in that initiative, you can receive a 30 percent federal tax credit on the product and installation.
Windows are great for allowing natural lighting into your home, but they aren’t always the best for protecting your privacy. That is why you need blinds or curtains to hang over them. Curtains are probably better if you’re going for a more specific design scheme, but for homeowners who are more concerned about controlling the lighting, convenience and their privacy, blinds are better. VELUX offers their own selection of blinds, but these are not like the ones you’ll typically find on the market. The blinds from VELUX are solar powered creations. Solar powered batteries make it possible for these blinds to be operated using an Intelligent Touch Remote. Once you get them home, you can attach them to the top of your windows and operate them as you like using the remote. Similar to the Solar Powered “Fresh Air” Skylight, you can receive a 30 percent federal tax credit if you buy one of these blinds because they are also covered by the Go Solar Initiative.
Homeowners who would still like to welcome a fair amount of natural light in when the blinds are drawn can purchase one of our light-filtering items. We have room-darkening blinds that keep a home’s interior better shielded from anyone who may be on the other side of the window. Or, if you really want your privacy protected when you draw your blinds, go ahead and buy one of VELUX’s flat blackout blinds. Also available from VELUX are single and double-pleated blinds. Regardless of which style solar powered blinds you choose, they come in a wide variety of colors. VELUX makes it easy to find quality products that will fit easily into your home’s design scheme.
Skylights are great for bringing natural lighting into one room, but if you want to cover a greater amount of space inside your home, you will need something else. VELUX’s sun tunnels, also known as Light Tubes or Solar Tubes, are great for providing plenty of lighting. Daniel Hood Roofing Systems provides different types of VELUX sun tunnels:
- Curb Mount TCR Tunnel. This sun tunnel is best for flat roofs, and it is covered up top by a dome that can be made out of acrylic or polycarbonate. Check your local ordinances, though, because acrylic domed skylights are not permitted everywhere.
- Flat Glass TLR Tunnel. In the event that an acrylic domed skylight cannot be installed in your neighborhood, you can choose the Flat Glass TLR Tunnel. This item provides terrific lighting and won’t be easily seen on top of your roof.
- Low Profile TGR Tunnel & Pitched TMR Tunnel. Folks who are living in areas that are often hit with hurricanes can choose from either the Low Profile TGR Tunnel or the Pitched TMR Tunnel. The Low Profile TGR Tunnel is easier to install while the Pitched TMR Tunnel is better at gathering and providing natural light.
After you purchase one of these quality VELUX sun tunnels, don’t forget to claim your 30 percent federal tax credit. They are also included in the Go Solar Initiative!
Protect Your Investment With the VELUX® No-Leak Promise
Some homeowners are concerned about water getting into their living rooms or bedrooms if they decide to install skylights. To ease those concerns, VELUX offers a No Leak Promise to customers. The No Leak Promise is a 10-year warranty for the installation, a 10-year warranty for the product itself and an additional 20-year warranty for the glass. You shouldn’t expect any leaking issues after you get the skylight installed, but in case one does pop up, VELUX will have you covered.
